Great news! Wizz Air launches new bases in Milan Malpensa and Tirana in Albania, adds 36 routes!
Here’s finally a really exciting piece of news after months of hearing only about bankrupting airlines and cancelled flights.
While many airlines are adding some flights and routes back on to what has been skeleton services, no one seems as enthusiastic in their endeavors as Hungarian low-cost carrier Wizz Air.
The carrier has declared the opening of two more European bases in July: one in Tirana and one at Milan’s Malpensa.
The carrier already operates ten routes to Tirana but is now extending its presence in the Albanian capital with a new base. Beginning in July, the airline will station three Airbus A320 at Tirana International Airport Nënë Tereza (Mother Theresa).
Along with the new base, it will inaugurate 15 new services to 8 countries, including Prague, Heraklion, Catania, Brussels (Charleroi), Berlin Schönefeld, and Torino. The carrier said that the establishment of the Tirana base would help create over 100 new direct jobs.
“After three years of successful operations we are dedicated to bringing more affordable travel to our Albanian customers while helping ramp up the local tourism sector. Our long term commitment to Albania by bringing further connectivity to Tirana and Albania will help foster economic ties with other countries,” József Váradi, CEO of Wizz Air Group, said.
Wizz Air further announced it would base five Airbus A321 aircraft at Milan’s Malpensa airport, also from July. Along with the new base, it will deploy 21 new services to 11 countries from the airport.
Among these are London Luton, Fuerteventura, Eindhoven, Rejkyavik, Tel Aviv, Athens, Santorini, Lisbon, Pristina, and Marrakech. Seats on the new routes are already bookable via the airline’s website, marketed for as little as €19.99.
The airline said that its announcements “came on the same day as the new era of sanitized travel begins at Wizz Air.” It has recently implemented new hygiene measure protocols.
These include face masks for both cabin crew and passengers, with crew also required to wear gloves. Aircraft undergo a regular “industry-leading fogging process” with an antiviral solution.
Furthermore, all passengers are provided with sanitizing wipes upon entering the aircraft, in-flight magazines have been removed, and contactless payment is encouraged for any purchases on board.
